Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Ramadan

From Fartun Abdullahi: Ramadan is March 22 – April 21 this year. For those of you who don’t know what Ramadan is, it is a religious practice that all Muslims take part in annually around this time of year where we fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting includes no eating, no drinking anything, no chewing gum, etc. One of the main reasons I am announcing this that so staff, teachers and the student body is aware and to support our Muslim students. Thank you, stay safe, stay positive, always stay hydrated, take care of one another and much love to all!

From Nyaagon Thuokok: as Non Muslims, let’s support our Muslim sisters and brothers by being mindful during this time during this time and to that I say Ramadan Mubarak!

Diversity Day

Unity in the Community Day is coming up on March 29th! Unity in the Community Day is a celebratory reinvention of what was once Roosevelt’s Unity in Diversity Day. Our mission at Roosevelt high School is to make Diversity and Inclusion immersive and engaging. For years, at Roosevelt, diversity has been a serious subject, but it is not something to be feared. This year, it is meant to open our perspectives on other identities, experiences, and have an honest reflection of ourselves. Diversity is important and necessary for a fun and collaborative community. We will teach and connect our community on the excellence of differences. Inclusion is fun, and with this purpose, that is why we are having this day.

Find out more about workshops, schedules, and much more about this this day on our website: https://rhsuitc.wixsite.com/site

Congratulations

Hands for a Bridge Update

32 RHS Hands for a Bridge students returned from their international journeys last week and returned to Roosevelt filled with new stories and new perspectives. 16 students went to Northern Ireland on a journey that involved time in Belfast meeting former political prisoners, touring neighborhood peace walls and learning from local historians, and a longer time in Derry attending school at Oakgrove, one of the few integrated schools in the region – where both Nationalist/Catholics and Loyalist/Protestants attend classes together. Our students joined the HFB chapter at this school in community visits, meeting peace activists, engaging in acts of remembrance for losses during the troubles, and facilitated a series of games and activities to help build bridges across divided elementary schools. The other 16 students in the class flew for nearly 29 hours to Capetown, South Africa where they had the opportunity to do a home stay with families in Langa Township, attend Islimela school with township buddies, visit the grave and memorial of American activist Amy Biehl, and learn from former political prisoners at Robben Island prison. Later, they got to do a homestay with families in the traditionally Afrikaner community of Bellville school and spend time attending and interacting with students from both schools in a series of facilitated discussions and activities. Students at both locations created and presented presentations for all-school assemblies, travelled through the region with their new local companions and developed relationships with families, artists, and activists. We were very proud of how well our students stayed curious, cooperative and resilient in these cross-cultural conditions. And there is no doubt they will bring their learning back to the classroom (and to their lives) here.
