Mayor Byron W. Brown announced today that a driving ban is now in effect for the City of Buffalo. With increasingly high winds and snow impacting the region, weather conditions quickly deteriorated this morning in parts of Western New York which remains under a blizzard warning, issued yesterday by the National Weather Service.

Mayor Brown stated, “This is a very serious situation. We’re already feeling an impact from the blizzard, which is here. The safety of our residents and workforce is our top priority. We knew this would be a significant wind and snow event and are asking people to stay off the roads. At this time, only Emergency Personnel and those previously authorized for emergency travel can drive.”

Conditions quickly deteriorated this morning in Buffalo.

  • A number of traffic signals are out at intersections; motorists who are authorized to travel at this time should treat every traffic signal that’s out as if it’s a four way stop
  • As anticipated, waves are roaring. The City’s 4 waterfront parks remain closed. (Ralph Wilson Park, Erie Basin Marina, Broderick Park and the Bird Island Pier)
  • At this time, City forestry crews report that a few dozen trees have been knocked down
In addition to the travel ban and the state of emergency (announced yesterday), below are a few other reminders:

  • Lincoln Community Center and Hennepin Community Center are open as warming centers today and tomorrow, from 9 am to 6 pm, adding to the CODE BLUE sites
  • If there are widespread outages, dry ice & water distribution will take place at Engine 21/Ladder 6 Firehouse on Jefferson Avenue both Saturday and Sunday
  • City residents are encouraged to sign up for BUFFALERT to stay informed of snow emergencies and other public service announcements. To sign for BUFFALERT, text your zip code to 38276
