U.S. Senator John Barrasso has released a report criticizing the International Energy Agency (IEA) for deviating from its original mission of promoting energy security. Barrasso, who serves as the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, claims that the IEA has become more focused on supporting energy transition efforts rather than maintaining energy security.
The report follows a letter sent by Barrasso to Dr. Fatih Birol, Director of the IEA, urging a return to the agency's core mission. In his report, Barrasso quotes French President Macron's remark that the IEA has become "the armed wing for implementing the Paris Agreement," expressing concern over this perceived shift in focus.
Barrasso argues that with numerous energy security challenges worldwide, it is essential for the IEA to provide "sober and unbiased analyses and projections" to guide policymakers and investors. He calls for the agency to produce an unbiased reference case similar to those provided by the Energy Information Administration and stresses that it should not endorse ending investments in oil, natural gas, and coal.
The report also highlights geopolitical challenges posed by countries such as China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela. Barrasso emphasizes that a strong and impartial IEA is crucial for navigating these issues but warns that its credibility needs restoration.
The senator concludes by stating that during the 119th Congress, efforts must be made to restore the IEA's reputation as a leader in energy security.
