Naming Background:
In October 2022, the parks department submitted an informal staff report to the Council seeking direction for initiating the naming process. The Council directed the department to identify some potential names with feedback from Parks Board and a community engagement component.
Naming goals included:
- A focus on “retail/rental” names instead of honorary names.
- Acknowledge significant features of the facility site, city, and community.
- Per City Policy, it should be unique, have a lasting significance, be familiar to the majority of the community, and be easy to recall.
The GO (Green Oaks)
- Refers to major thoroughfares near the facility.
- Acknowledges the prevalence of oak trees on the land.
- Action name that lends itself well to marketing/advertising campaigns.
- A nod to Green Oaks as a loop around the city.
- Speaks to access from the entire city.
- Double meaning that ties into the recreational component of the facility with the indoor track and workout rotations.
- Active words conveying participation or involvement.
- Double meaning; represents active adult demographic (an established Arlington senior group).
- Conveys the highest or culminating point.
- Referring to the Active Adult Center as a top-class facility.
Arlington voters approved general obligation bonds for $45 million in a May 6, 2017, vote to build an Active Adult Center. Plans call for the facility to be across the street from the West Police Station and located on the current Pierce Burch Water Treatment site off of Green Oaks Blvd. (between W. Arkansas Ln. and W. Pioneer Pkwy).
Amenities of the recreation center could include a full-court gymnasium, aquatics component for both water exercise and leisure, locker rooms, fitness area, walking track, multi-purpose rooms for educational programs/events or passive activities, special events space, and outdoor patio. The available budget will determine all amenities and program offerings.
Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2023, with anticipated project completion in winter 2024.
