Start a Conversation – #BePrepared

Town of Hanna recently issued the following announcement.

Once a week, leading up to Emergency Preparedness Week in May, we will be sharing some things you could be doing to prepare for an unexpected event. You will be seeing #BePrepared used locally, regionally, and provincially. Each week we will give you one small step to becoming more prepared.

Only 34% of Albertans have started to discuss emergency preparedness with their colleagues, families and friends. Talking about it is the first step in making your plan but How? Not sure where to begin? How about these ideas:

With Family and Children

  • First off, remain focused on safety and reassure children that during a real emergency there will be many caring adults working to keep them safe.
  • Talk about some of the different places an emergency could happen. Schoo., home, church, a friend’s house, and what the family should do in to prepare.
  • Brainstorm words that relate to emergency preparedness such as tornado, blizzard, flashlight, first-aid and create flash cards to illustrate and explain the definitions of those words and how they relate to being prepared.
  • Design artwork to decorate the outside of an emergency kit.
  • Role Playing Games to answer important questions. What do we do when a toronado comes? What is an emergency plan? Where is our emergency kit? What do we put into our emergency kit?
  • Have a race! Gather piles of disaster supplies and have children race to pick something they might need in a disaster. Be sure to add in items such as a princess crown, wall clock) so children have to choose.
  • Invite a special guest
  • What if your family had to meet up outside the neighborhood? Where will you go? How will you get there? (hint: emergency responders and firefighters are your friends)
  • What will you do with your pets?

With Friends and Colleagues

  • Compare your household emergency plans and look for anything missing.
  • Gather together to create your emergency kits. Maybe make extra to donate or deliver to your neighbor.
  • Get to know your neighbors.
  • Consider if you’d like to be involved in Emergency Response in Hanna (more information on this opportunity coming soon)
  • Does everyone you know have the Alberta Emergency Alert app downloaded?
  • Have your neighbors all signed up for the Town of Hanna alerts?

Register for Hanna Alerts

The Town of Hanna alert system is used to issue alerts in the event of an emergency or an event that may impact you. You will receive a time-sensitive text message and phone call on your mobile phone. If you have provided a landline number, you will receive a phone call with an automated voice. Notifications include, but are not limited to:

  • Public Safety Alerts such as water, fire, RCMP, or any event which is considered an immediate threat to the safety and well-being of some or all Hanna residents.
  • Local events such as water supply issues or snow removal schedules based on your residential address.

NOTE: This does NOT replace the Alberta Emergency Alert. Register today for the notification alerts by visiting Hanna Alert System on our website. A test alert will be issued during National Emergency Preparedness week in May.
