Sen. John Barrasso, a Republican Senator from Wyoming and chair of the Senate Republican Conference, made several public statements on October 3, 2025, regarding the ongoing government shutdown and the Senate’s efforts to pass a continuing resolution.
In his first post at 17:28 UTC, Barrasso announced an imminent Senate vote: “The Senate is about to vote today on a clean continuing resolution to reopen the government. @SenateGOP is going to vote for it. Democrats have the opportunity to do the right thing for the American people: vote for a clean continuing resolution that will reopen the government.”
Later that day at 18:52 UTC, Barrasso criticized Democratic leadership in another post: “There’s only one person standing in the way of reopening the government, the minority leader. He fears retribution from the radical socialist left. The radical socialist left, like @SenSanders, @SenWarren, and @RepAOC, have become the Democrat leaders in this shutdown.”
At 19:39 UTC, Barrasso posted again about voting patterns during the shutdown debate: “Four times @SenateGOP has voted to keep the government open. Four times Senate Democrats have voted to shut down the government. They have abandoned their responsibility and chosen politics above the American people.”
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass funding legislation or when such legislation is vetoed by the President. During these periods, non-essential federal operations are suspended until new appropriations are approved. Continuing resolutions are temporary measures that allow federal agencies to continue operating at current funding levels while lawmakers negotiate longer-term spending bills.
As chair of the Senate Republican Conference, Sen. Barrasso plays a key role in shaping messaging and legislative strategy for Senate Republicans.
