Sen. John Barrasso, U.S. Senator representing Wyoming, has recently taken to social media to criticize Democratic lawmakers over government funding issues and the ongoing government shutdown.

On October 15, 2025, Barrasso stated, “Democrats have had 9 opportunities to pay the men and women who keep our skies clear, keep our borders secure, and keep our communities safe. Nine times they have voted to shut the government down. Make no doubt about it, the far left is controlling today’s Democrat party.”

Continuing his commentary on October 16, 2025, Barrasso wrote, “We will vote soon on a bipartisan appropriations bill to fund the Department of Defense. A bill to pay the warfighters, the troops, the people who keep our nation and our allies safe. Will Democrats work with us?”

Later that same day, he added, “Democrats continue to pander to the far left. They are playing a dangerous political game. Every day the #SchumerShutdown continues it gets more dangerous for the American people.”

These statements come amid an ongoing federal government shutdown, which occurs when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions to fund federal agencies. Government shutdowns have occurred multiple times in recent years due to disagreements between political parties over budget priorities and policy provisions.

The reference to “#SchumerShutdown” in Barrasso’s posts points to a common partisan tactic of assigning blame for shutdowns to opposing party leaders, in this case Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Shutdowns can affect various government services and have direct impacts on federal employees and contractors.

Senator Barrasso’s comments reflect ongoing partisan debates in Congress regarding government funding and priorities for national defense and border security.
