Sen. John Barrasso, U.S. Senator from Wyoming and a member of the Senate Republican leadership, has voiced strong opposition to Democratic spending proposals in a series of posts on his X account between September 30 and October 1, 2025.
On September 30, Barrasso criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s approach to ongoing government funding negotiations, writing, “Republicans aren’t buying Schumer’s ransom demands. The American people should not suffer the costs and the consequences of a #SchumerShutdown.”
Later that evening, Barrasso elaborated on his objections to the Democrats’ proposals, stating in a post dated September 30: “What’s in the Democrats’ ransom note?
– Over $1 trillion in new spending for far-left priorities
– $350 billion to continue ‘temporary’ COVID-era spending
– Billions for radical climate projects
– $8 billion for woke projects overseas”
The following day, October 1, Barrasso commented on the status of government operations during the standoff: “We’re in the middle of the Schumer Shutdown. The Democrats caved in completely to the radical wing of their party and abandoned the American people in the process.”
These statements come as Congress faces renewed challenges over federal budget appropriations and potential shutdowns. Disputes over government funding have been recurrent issues in recent years, with partisan disagreements often leading to short-term resolutions or lapses in funding.
