Senator John Barrasso, representing Wyoming, addressed a range of topics on his social media account on November 4, 2025. His posts included a tribute to former Vice President Dick Cheney and criticism of the Democratic Party regarding an ongoing government shutdown.
In his first post of the day, Barrasso wrote, “Wyoming mourns the passing of Vice President Dick Cheney. From high school football star to White House Chief of Staff, Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President, Dick’s career has few peers in American life. His unflinching leadership shaped many of the biggest” (November 4, 2025). Cheney was a prominent figure in American politics with deep ties to Wyoming and held several key positions in government.
Later that afternoon, Barrasso criticized Democrats over the recent federal government shutdown. He stated, “Democrats have shut down the government for 35 days because they want free healthcare for illegal immigrants. That’s who they are. That’s what they believe. That is their commitment, not to the American people, but to the illegal immigrants.” (November 4, 2025).
In another post on the same day, Barrasso claimed that labor unions aligned with Democrats were urging party leaders to end the shutdown: “Even Democrats’ supporters in the unions are pleading with Democrats to reopen the government.” (November 4, 2025).
Dick Cheney served as Vice President from 2001 to 2009 under President George W. Bush and previously held roles including U.S. Secretary of Defense and White House Chief of Staff. The federal government has faced multiple shutdowns over policy disputes; during these periods non-essential operations cease until Congress reaches a funding agreement.
Barrasso’s comments reflect ongoing partisan debate about immigration policy and healthcare access in relation to federal budget negotiations.
