Patty Rafferty: Unofficial Poop Fairy

Town of Hanna recently issued the following announcement.

This week we feature Patty Rafferty, Lexie and Lewie. Otis and his friends are happy.

We recognize and thank you!

It’s in the Trash, but it isn’t Gone

We tend to forget that when something is thrown into the trash, it isn’t really gone. The same is true for the bags used to pick up dog waste – they don’t disappear just because you’ve tossed them.

Upcycling grocery-store bags is a common practice but we suggest spending just a little extra on biodegradable bags. Either way, the bag and the poop travel to the landfill, which is not conducive to breaking down any type of plastic – biodegradable or not. This means that we have millions of tons of dog waste wrapped in plastic bags sitting and rotting in our landfills for decades.

Join the Club

These weekly reminders are intended to recognize a few of the loyal citizens who have been diligent in picking up after their pets throughout the year. Join the club! You do not have to be a pet owner. There are lots of parks and green spaces that could use a spring cleanup. If you’d like, pop into the Town Office and request a free waste bag container (while supplies last) that you can clip onto your bag or jacket. That way, you have one handy when you come across some leftover poop.
