U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) has announced her support for legislation aimed at protecting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for Wyoming residents during the ongoing government shutdown. Approximately 28,000 people in Wyoming rely on SNAP and other food assistance programs, which are expected to lose funding after November 1 due to the lapse in federal appropriations. Nationally, this could affect more than 40 million Americans who depend on these services.
Senator Lummis stated, “A clean continuing resolution is the only way to ensure that SNAP and WIC remain funded, that federal law enforcement and air traffic controllers get paid, and that small business owners, ranchers, and farmers have access to critical loans. Until five more Democrats join us in voting for the clean CR, I will, of course, support legislation to ensure no child in Wyoming goes to bed hungry during the shutdown.”
The Keep SNAP Funded Act was introduced by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO). The bill proposes full funding for SNAP throughout the duration of the government shutdown by allowing Congress to appropriate funds retroactively from its start date.
