U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Senate Majority Whip, delivered remarks on the Senate floor highlighting what he described as significant achievements by President Donald J. Trump and Congressional Republicans during their first year of unified government. Barrasso contrasted these accomplishments with his criticism of the Democratic Party, which he characterized as increasingly influenced by socialist ideas.

Barrasso said, “The Democrat Party has been hijacked by socialists. Now, they’re holding the American people hostage. Why? Because Democrats are radical and extreme.”

He noted that a year ago, voters rejected high prices, open borders, and what he called the weakness of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in favor of Republican leadership. According to Barrasso, this resulted in a historic victory for Republicans: “President Trump won every single battleground state. He won the popular vote. He moved 2,793 counties to the right. That’s 89 percent of the counties in the United States.” He also stated that Senate Republicans secured a 53-seat majority while House Republicans maintained control.

Barrasso credited Republican policies for securing U.S. borders and claimed that no illegal immigrants have been released into the country over the past five months. He contrasted this with previous years under President Biden when “over 10 million illegal immigrants flooded into our nation,” adding that incentives such as free healthcare and other benefits had ended.

On economic matters, Barrasso highlighted falling gas prices and slowing inflation since President Trump took office again: “Gas prices have dropped to their lowest point in four years… Inflation has cooled.” He cited tax cuts signed into law by President Trump as central to economic improvement, noting specific benefits for various groups including families in Wyoming, service workers who pay no tax on tips or overtime, new parents receiving investment accounts for newborns, increased child tax credits, seniors gaining deductions on Social Security income, and relief from estate taxes for farmers and small business owners.

“If Democrats had their way,” Barrasso argued, “families would be paying more… Every single Democrat voted for a $4 trillion tax increase.” He asserted that Republican votes enabled Americans to keep more of their earnings.

Barrasso also addressed foreign policy and national security: “Military recruitment has surged to its highest point in 15 years… Deterrence is back.” He attributed diplomatic successes such as progress on Iran’s nuclear program and peace agreements abroad to President Trump’s administration.

Criticizing Senate Democrats’ actions during recent legislative sessions, Barrasso accused them of blocking nominees and contributing to what he called “the longest government shutdown in American history.” According to him: “During the 36 days of the Schumer Shutdown, Democrats have voted against reopening the government 14 times.”

Barrasso concluded with concerns about Democratic leadership at local levels: “Yesterday, in New York City, they elected as mayor a socialist who wants to defund the police…” Summing up his position on party differences moving forward he said: “One year ago, Americans chose a better path… We will continue to fight to get America back on track.”
