U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Senate Majority Whip, appeared on Fox News’ The Sunday Briefing with Jacqui Heinrich to address concerns about a potential government shutdown. Barrasso criticized Democratic leadership, specifically targeting Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Barrasso stated, “The radical wing of the Democrat party is demanding that Chuck Schumer shut down the government and if he doesn’t, there’s going to be hell to pay with his left wing. And in spite of a meeting coming up at the White House, and in spite of the damage it’s going to do to the country, Chuck Schumer is trying to save his own hide. He’s given us a trillion-dollar ransom note that he wants for the government just to stay open for the next four weeks. It’s preposterous! […] President Trump’s not going pay this ransom. There’s a simple solution, a bipartisan solution, already passed the House, continuing resolution to fund the government for seven weeks at the current state of funding […]”

He continued by emphasizing the importance of maintaining government operations: “We need to keep the government open and functioning. It’s the right thing to do for our country, and we’ve done it 13 times when Joe Biden was in the White House. We need to continue it and then continue the negotiations and the discussions and the appropriations process, the budgeting over the next seven weeks so we can fund the government for the next year.”

The debate over how best to avoid a shutdown remains ongoing as lawmakers discuss short-term funding measures.
